Noodlesoft isn’t lying when they say their software is “simply useful.” Their application, Hazel, keeps your Mac organized the way you want it. Just set the rules, and it moves, deletes, and even takes out the trash accordingly. No more 20 GB worth of junk sitting in your garbage, and no more downloads sitting in your desktop.

Here are a few of the cool things this app can do for you:

Automatically move files based on name, date, type, and where it came from.

Automatically searches for all support files etc. when you delete an application.

Keep your trash from accumulating past a certain point.

Supports Growl notifications.

As if that isn’t enough, it was given a five-star rating by MacUser, MacUpdate, and VersionTracker.

Like all other things on the market, products eventually lose their luster and become obsolete, making way for newer and cooler tech gear. But the iPhone? Many companies may have tried, but based on what I’ve seen, I don’t think people are going to start ditching their iPhones for iPhonys. Roger McNamee, founding partner of venture capital firm Elevation Partners, thinks differently. Regarding this ideology, he said:

“You know the beautiful thing: June 29, 2009, is the two- year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone,” McNamee said today in an interview in San Francisco. “Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later.”

And what device is going to steal the spotlight from the reigning champ? Elevation Partners has a large stake in Palm, and because of a disappointing quarter, they’re hoping the Pre can save the company.

He brings up another valid point, in regards to people buying the newest phone in the store:

“Think about it—If you bought the first iPhone, you bought it because you wanted the coolest product on the market,” said McNamee, 52. “Your two-year contract has just expired. Look around. Tell me what they’re going to buy.”

All this said, there most likely won’t be any huge sales, because, well, the economy sucks. If Palm is looking for a comeback, sales in the smart phone department probably won’t cut it.

It’s March 3rd and Apple has just added three new Macs to the line: the new iMac, the new Mac Mini, and the new Mac Pro.

The new iMac features a 20″ or 24″ screen, high performance NVIDIA graphics, 4GB standard memory standard (on the 24″ model), and comes standard with iLife ’09. The 20″ 2.66Ghz model with 2GB memory, a 320GB hard drive, and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics will cost you a mere $1,199. On the high end, the 24″ 3.06Ghz model with 4GB memory, a 1TB hard drive, and NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 with 512MB memory will set you back $2,199.

The new Mac Mini also features high performance NVIDIA graphics and includes iLife ’09. The energy-conscious will also be happy to hear that the Mac Mini is the world’s most energy-efficient desktop computer, using 45% less energy than before. It features 5 USB ports, a FireWire 800 port, and both a Mini DVI port and Mini DisplayPort. There are two models: a 120GB hard drive model with 1GB memory and 320 GB hard drive model with 2GB memory. Both feature 2.0Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, an 8x double-layer SuperDrive, and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics.

Apple really shows what it’s made of when it comes to the Mac Pro. The new Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processor nearly doubles performance, with four cores on one die and an integrated memory controller. Speed freaks will love the new interior, which makes it easier to add up to 32GB of memory, four PCI Express expansion cards, and up to 4TB of hard drive space. Once again, this line features high performance NVIDIA and AMD graphics. The two models, Quad-Core and 8-Core, feature a 640GB hard drive, 18x double-layer SuperDrive, and NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 512MB graphics. The Quad-Core will run you $2,499 with one 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processor and 3GB of memory (three 1GB sticks). The 8-Core will run you $3,299 with two 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processors and 6GB of memory (six 1GB sticks).

Paul Thurrott has something to say about Safari 4 Beta. Spoiler alert–he hates it.

I won’t say anything negative about him, considering he has valid points. Safari 4 doesn’t cater to every Windows user needs. But why should it? It’s made for Macs! McDonald’s and Burger King are rivals, but you don’t see McDonald’s selling their delicious golden fries at Burger King and Burger King selling their juicy Whoppers at McDonald’s. The way I see it, Apple designs software for their operating system, and generously shares it with Windows users. Where’s our Internet Explorer?

Enough of my rant. Throughout his post, he describes the major downfall of Safari 4: pointless visuals. He believes Apple halfheartedly throws in CoverFlow into everything, as stated here:

And speaking of pointless visual effects, allow me to point out the most recent and most egregious use of Apple’s Cover Flow display. This display, which Apple purchased from a third party company, makes some sense in highly graphical UIs, like when browsing album art in iTunes. It makes less sense in, say, a PC operating system shell, where Apple uses it as an optional view style in its OS X Finder. And it makes absolutely no sense at all in a browser. Naturally, Apple added it to Safari.

The Top Sites feature also has him agitated. How dare them switch from basic text to 3-dimensional thumbnails!

Top Sites’ curved, TV-like display would look wonderful on, well, a TV. But it’s pointlessly visual in a tool that, by nature, is used to find information online.

He (or other users, as he puts it) obviously didn’t enjoy the gesture Apple took to make Windows users feel more at home, either:

. . .”new Windows-native look,” which, as anyone who’s used the browser will tell you, is long overdue. (Previous versions looked like an OS X app.)

And, of course, who could have a rant without having a direct insult?

Apple fanatics–you know, those idiots who would buy anything with an Apple logo on it–will get all giddy and clap like little girls at a Hannah Montana concert when they see Top Sites, the new default Safari 4 home page.

So basically, his standpoint is this: Windows users just won’t be happy with this Apple created web browser made for the Mac OS on a Windows platform.

It’s hard to know what to think about Safari on Windows, and it’s unclear if Apple is even serious about treating Windows users fairly. If you look over Safari’s capabilities on Mac OS X, you’ll see some unique Mac-only features that are interesting, and certainly the browser is less jarring looking on that platform. On Windows … I don’t know. I suspect most people who excitedly try Safari 4 will very quickly move back to the more comfortable confines of IE or Firefox. I already have.

If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, you’re probably aware of the plethora of pointless apps that make you laugh for a few minutes, then the magic is just gone. Cult of Mac found a new one: Do Not Taunt the Angry Cat.

The app features a picture of a disturbing wet cat (as if all cats aren’t already cynical-looking enough) that emits angry cat noises and occasionally attacks you. Think of it as one of those “what is wrong with this picture?” tricks we all know and love. . . to hate.

But this is just the program. The best part is the background information the author gives:

“Nonscientific studies have shown that 94.3% of all people are completely unprepared for an angry cat incident. For that reason, we created AngryCat – the Angry Cat Simulator.”

And, of course, the scenario recreation:

“The best thing you can do when confronted with an angry cat is walk away (or, in some cases, bow and crawl backwards away slowly, acknowledging its supremacy). This application is designed to simulate the effects of what happens when you do NOT do this. Touching and moving an angry cat is a bad idea! If you don’t believe us, try the app and see for yourself what can happen.”

As for the comments, well, they’re the same as every other app out there. One guy says “worst waste of money ever” and another “apps should be cheaper check yes if you agree,” then others rebuke and say “It’s only the price of a coffee” or “You try to do better.”

The App Store. The melting pot of immature children, developers, and that guy who made 3,000 dollars off of a picture of a diamond.

It seems as though everyone is pushing newer lines of everything, understandably. The digital transition is coming, and unfortunately so is the obsolescence date for older Mac models. If you have one of these computers, it looks like Saint Patty’s Day won’t be so lucky for you.

Yes, on March 17th the following products will be deemed “vintage” or “obsolete” in Asia-Pacific, Canada, Europe, Japan, Latin America, the United States and retail Apple Stores. After this date, Apple will not provide service parts or documentation for these items and they cannot be sent in as Mail-In Repairs to AppleCare Repair Centers.

The “Vintage” List

Xserve RAID
Xserve (Slot Load)
Xserve (Cluster Node)

The “Obsolete” List

PowerBook G4
Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio)
Power Mac G4 (Quicksilver)
Macintosh Server G4 (Digital Audio)
Macintosh Server G4 (Quicksilver)

You may be wondering what the difference between vintage and obsolete is. MacMerc gives this explination:

It’s kind of a legal thing. Service parts for vintage products are only available to repair older Apple products purchased in the state of California, as required by statute. There is no difference between vintage and obsolete products anywhere else.

I feel for you G4 users. I bought my MacBook a few months ago, only for it to be replaced by a newer model a few months later. As they say, nearly every piece of technology is outdated once it’s bought due to the fact that a newer version is already being planned.

As always, Mac is a step ahead of Microsoft, creating intuitive controls and aesthetically-appealing designs that make you love the look of your computer. This time it’s the browser realm, with the introduction of the Safari 4 Beta.

The most memorable addition to Safari, in my opinion is the Top Sites feature. Safari takes the sites you’ve visited most often and puts them into a 3-dimensional grid of 6, 12, or 24 thumbnails, each updated live if available. The beauty of this feature is the ability to pin the sites, preventing them from shifting along the pattern. You can always delete items, further personalizing your top lists.

Another cool feature is the cover-flow history. Ever since the release of iTunes cover flow, it seems like Apple has implemented this visually-enthralling concept with everything possible, whether it be iPods, finder, or in this case, Safari. Within a few clicks you can browse and search through your history with a preview of each site (except, of course for those protected sites such as purchases).
